Artist Statement: The main theme of this piece is space. When running the program (which you can find at the end of this blog post) the screen fades in from black revealing the moon, earth and stars (you'll need to download the actual program to see the stars more clearly). At random times, a shooting star flies past the screen making a sparkling noise as it does. Relaxing music also plays in the background reinforcing the space theme. The stars are generated randomly and have different "lifetimes". This means that some stars fade quicker than others. I made the poster in Game Maker 7 which is an incredibly outdated program that's small enough to install onto the school computers. Using the built in scripting language I was able to modify where all of the parts of the poster where, how they moved, the fade in at the beginning and pretty much anything else you could think of. Of course, this isn't a traditional way of making art (at least not in the classroom) so specific styles and techniques may not apply. You can't truly add depth to a two-dimensional screen like you can in the real world, for example. A main part of this project was the act of inspiration itself. My inspiration from this piece mostly came from this nifty little virtual reality experience I had a few months ago. In this experience, you could look at the planets of the solar system and learn about them through a virtual reality headset like Google Cardboard (which I used). This experience inspired both the space idea and the fake three-dimensional idea. Not only that, but when working on the pre-assignment I found a quote that perfectly fit my intentions. This quote used space as it's theme and was focused on achieving your goals. One of the biggest goals of my piece was accurately creating the illusion of a three dimensional space. Along with this, I wanted to make a star field that seemed endless. Though I wasn't able to fully achieve the latter as much as I wanted I do think I succeeded in creating the illusion of a three-dimensional space. Another goal was taking my design oriented background and giving it an artistic flair. I don't think I achieved this goal as well as the last two goals. This piece looks the most like the image in my head compared to all of my other projects in the past. If was to guess why it would probably be because I could actually go back and correct my mistakes much more easily. In past projects, once a mistake was made I couldn't really get rid of it fully nor did I have the talent to turn that negative into a positive. Though this is the last project in this class I think I've learned a lot about the way I think when it comes to design and art. I've learned that I normally plan way to much and don't leave much room for improvisation. I think I'll try to improve upon this by adding that extra room for errors or later inspiration in my later projects for college. Get the animated poster here. (Google Drive Link)
