Artist Statement I don’t really like the look of my piece. I think I learned a lot about working with paper but the piece still looks like a creepy goat face without a brain who probably isn’t very bright. If I was to name my piece it would be called “Creepy Goat Face Who Isn’t Very Bright I Think”. (I wrote this artists statement before making the full title). Shape is probably the biggest element of art used in my piece as there is a variety of them ranging from rectangular shapes to circular shapes to… actually, that’s about it. The piece is made out of paper and paper mache with paper making up the goat face and paper mache making up the frame. There is also loads of glue and tape on the piece. Hopefully I managed to cover that up but time will tell. I think layering was used very well in the goat face. Tape and glue irritated me way too much so on the next piece I’ll probably stick with 2D or move on to another 3D material like clay. A big inspiration for this piece was mounted heads. Though a little creepy, I think animals can be represented well based on mounted heads. I don’t really want the piece to have a message. If I was however, it would be up to the viewer of the piece to decide on what that message actually was. I did a lot better on the final piece that I thought I would on the planning phase. In the planning phase, I never really thought that I could achieve a 3D effect with paper that I did with this piece. At first, I was just going to layer everything in order to get that 3D effect. In the end, I decided to just fold the base head instead. Call it lazy but to me it made the piece work out better in the end… even if the head is hollow... Still, as much as I learned about 3D in this piece I don’t really want to explore it too much in later projects. It’s fun to see a piece come alive in a 3D space but quality assurance can be done much more easier in a 2D space than in 3D. Making everything look correct was one of the biggest challenges I ran into when making this piece. In 3D, you have to worry about gravity. I didn’t plan for this in the… uh… planning stage but I will think about it in later projects. I did not document as much as I did in previous projects for this project. I did however, take this snapshot after cutting out some pieces near the beginning of putting everything together. I also have a picture of the pre-assignment where I practiced the different elements of art on the same picture.
